If you've spent more than ten minutes in a cycling forum in the last five years, you've been caught in the crossfire of one of amateur cycling's most exhausting arguments. Sweet spot devotees tell you polarized is impractical. Polarized disciples tell you sweet spot is just "the grey zone in a fancy hat." Threshold purists say both camps are missing the point. Meanwhile, the rider who asked the original question is more confused than when they started.

Here's the honest version: both approaches work, and neither is universally superior. The right choice depends on a small set of concrete variables — your weekly hours, where you are in your season, and what's actually limiting your fitness right now. That's it. Let's work through it.

What Each Method Actually Is

Sweet spot training targets roughly 88–93% of FTP — the intensity band that sits just below your anaerobic threshold. At this effort level, you're accumulating a strong training stimulus without the recovery cost of full threshold work. A well-executed sweet spot session looks like 3 x 15 minutes at 88-93% FTP with complete recovery between reps. Done badly, it looks like every ride drifting into that moderate zone indefinitely, which is where the problems start.

Polarized training allocates roughly 80% of sessions below the first lactate threshold (genuinely easy) and 20% above the second threshold (genuinely hard), with almost nothing in the middle. Prof. Stephen Seiler's research on elite endurance athletes consistently documents that the best-adapted athletes across multiple sports gravitate toward this distribution at high training volumes — mostly easy, occasionally very hard, almost nothing moderate.

The confusion arises because coaches sometimes mix up the level (sweet spot as an intensity zone) with the distribution (sweet spot as a training philosophy). You can run a polarized distribution that includes sweet spot efforts as your hard sessions. What you can't do is run "sweet spot" as a dominant distribution — because that puts you in the moderate zone on most days, which is the exact zone the research suggests produces the most accumulated fatigue relative to adaptation.

What the Research Actually Says

The most cited head-to-head comparison is Stöggl and Sperlich's 2014 study, which put 48 well-trained endurance athletes through nine weeks of four different intensity distributions: polarized, threshold, high-volume, and high-intensity. The polarized group produced the largest gains in VO2peak, time to exhaustion, and peak power output. The threshold-dominant group showed smaller gains.

Critically, that research was conducted on already well-trained athletes with the weekly hours to make 80/20 work. The polarized model needs volume to function — you need enough easy-zone riding that the hard sessions land on a genuinely recovered aerobic base. Under 8–10 hours per week, building that volume is simply not possible for most athletes.

For time-crunched riders, several studies of sweet spot blocks show meaningful FTP gains in 4–6 week windows. When you have only 4–6 hours per week, sweet spot accumulates more useful training stimulus per hour than polarized can, because you don't have the volume to build the aerobic base that makes polarized training work. It's not that sweet spot is better — it's that polarized requires the volume to operate correctly, and that volume isn't available.

The Decision Tree

The practical decision is straightforward once you frame it correctly:

  • Under 8 hours per week: Sweet spot is the more efficient choice. Structured blocks of 2–3 sweet spot sessions per week, with everything else genuinely easy, will build FTP effectively in the time you have.
  • 8–12 hours per week: A hybrid approach works well — polarized distribution with sweet spot as your hard-day structure. You have enough easy volume that the polarized base starts to function, but sweet spot intervals give you more time-at-stimulus than pure VO2max efforts.
  • Above 12 hours per week: Full polarized distribution wins because you now have the volume for the aerobic base to do its job. Riders at 4+ W/kg with this training load consistently see diminishing returns from heavy sweet spot usage.

Season timing also matters. A polarized aerobic base through the winter or early season, followed by a focused sweet spot block in the 6–8 weeks before a target event, is the structure most experienced coached amateurs now use — and it's defensible from both a physiological and practical standpoint.

What This Means for Your Riding

Stop treating this as an identity question. The right training distribution is a prescription, not a personality. Assess your weekly hours honestly, check how far out your target event is, and use the decision tree above to pick an approach. Then stick to it for at least 6 weeks before evaluating whether it's working.

The one rule both camps agree on: don't spend most of your time in the moderate zone. Whether you're doing sweet spot blocks or pure polarized, the rides that aren't intervals should be genuinely easy — not "kinda easy, but I pushed the last climb because it felt good." That moderate drift is where training plans fall apart, regardless of which methodology you've chosen.
