Starting January 1, 2028, bike computers used in UCI competition will be limited to maximum dimensions of 126mm by 71mm. The rule, announced on June 6, 2026, positions the governing body squarely in the debate over whether more data actually makes riders faster or simply overwhelms them when racing at the limit.

The Cognitive Load Problem

The UCI's stated rationale is straightforward: modern head units have evolved far beyond simple speed and distance displays. Today's flagship devices show navigation, live power analysis, heart rate zones, body temperature, nutrition alerts, and even glucose monitoring in some cases. The federation argues this expanding volume of real-time information can add to mental workload in already chaotic race situations, potentially compromising safety.

According to the UCI, limiting screen size is one way to prevent the data environment from growing unchecked. It's not so much about banning current devices as drawing a line around future development. The 126mm by 71mm limit broadly reflects the largest products currently on the market, giving manufacturers more than 18 months to adapt before enforcement.

For context, a Garmin Edge 1040 measures approximately 117mm x 59mm, while a Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM sits at 89mm x 56mm. The new rule essentially freezes the upper boundary at roughly the size of today's largest units.

More Than Just Screens

The computer size limit arrived alongside other equipment updates. From July 1, 2026, front jersey pockets will be banned except for a single pocket designed solely to hold a race radio. The move targets aerodynamic advantages some riders have gained by tucking radios or even hydration bladders inside their jerseys, a tactic spotted at races like Unbound Gravel 2026.

The UCI will also revise its sanctions table for non-compliant equipment starting July 1, introducing new penalties for bike accessories and rider-worn items. The goal, according to the announcement, is to make sanctions more proportionate and consistently applied.

The Legal Battle Continues

The June 6 announcement also revealed the UCI will escalate its legal dispute with SRAM over maximum gear ratios, taking the case to Belgium's Court of Cassation after losing an appeal. The Maximum Gear Ratio Test Protocol, which would have limited rollout to roughly a 54x11 equivalent, remains suspended following a ruling by the Belgian Competition Authority in October 2025.

The UCI argues gear restrictions could improve rider safety in professional road cycling, but SRAM successfully challenged the measure on competition law grounds. The appeal is unlikely to settle whether gear limits make racing safer but could define how much legal authority the UCI holds when technical safety rules affect equipment suppliers.

What This Means for Your Riding

For most enthusiast cyclists, the computer size cap won't change much in the near term. Your current head unit isn't going anywhere, and the devices you'll buy over the next 18 months will still be UCI-legal come 2028.

But the rule signals a broader philosophical shift. The UCI is pushing back against the assumption that more data always equals better performance.
