There's a persistent argument in cycling enthusiast circles that e-bikes aren't "real" cycling — that the motor subsidy means you're not actually training, not actually earning the miles, not actually getting fit. It's an argument that doesn't survive contact with the data. Multiple studies across multiple countries now paint a consistent picture: e-bike commuters ride more often, farther, and with more regularity than conventional cyclists in the same comparison groups. A Norwegian study tracking riders who switched to e-bikes found they increased their daily bike trips to 1.4 per day and average distance to 10.3km — substantially higher than what conventional cyclists in the same comparison group logged. The e-bike doesn't replace the exercise. It removes the friction that was stopping people from riding in the first place — hills, headwinds, distance, arriving at work sweaty.
The Carbon Numbers: Significant and Measurable
An NHS-affiliated study of staff who switched to e-bike commuting recorded a 34.3% decrease in commute CO₂ emissions and a 35% reduction in commute energy use per person annually. Across multiple academic reviews of trip data, 35–50% of e-bike journeys directly substitute for a car trip — not a transit trip or a walk, but a car trip that would have happened otherwise.
The per-trip calculation is straightforward: switching from a car to a bicycle or e-bike for daily transport cuts roughly 3.2 kg of CO₂ per person per day. Over a working year of 220 commute days, that's over 700 kg of CO₂ avoided — roughly the same emissions as a return transatlantic flight.
For urban planners, the math is even more compelling. In many European cities, e-bikes are now the fastest transport option for trips under 10km when accounting for traffic congestion, parking search time, and last-mile walking. Some of this is selection bias — people who choose to ride tend to have more positive attitudes toward active commuting. But the physiological benefits of moderate-intensity daily exercise on cortisol, sleep quality, and cognitive function are robust enough that the direction of the effect is not in doubt.
The Growth Picture: E-Bikes Are Now the Market
The data on adoption is stark. The Physical Activity Council found that 19.4% of Americans who rode a bike at least once in 2023 used an e-bike, up from 7.8% in 2021 — a more-than-doubling in two years. In Europe, the trajectory is longer and steeper — European e-bike sales grew at roughly 30% per year between 2006 and 2017, and current infrastructure investment is accelerating adoption further. If you're a performance cyclist sceptical of e-bikes, consider two things. First, your commuting e-bike days and your training days don't compete — they stack. Moderate daily e-bike activity contributes to general cardiovascular health, reduces cumulative fatigue from car-commuting stress, and keeps your legs moving on days that aren't structured training sessions.
Second, the advocacy calculus matters. Every person on an e-bike on the commute is a person not in a car, which builds the political will for the infrastructure that all cyclists benefit from. If you want better bike lanes, more separated infrastructure, and safer roads, e-bike adoption is on your side — even if the bikes themselves aren't your thing.
